🐐 About Nessie
Nessie is one of the unforgettable quintuplets born to June Bug and Tundra in 2023—a truly special litter! She was the fifth and final kid to arrive and needed a little extra care at the start. Born with a crooked neck, likely from being a bit squished by her siblings in utero, she required some gentle TLC and light physical therapy in her first few days. Thankfully, she bounced back quickly and was soon thriving like the rest.
During that time of extra care and close bonding, Nessie completely stole my heart. With her tiny hooves and determined spirit, she left an impression I couldn’t ignore—and it didn’t take long for me to realize she wasn’t going anywhere. Nessie earned her place in our herd, and I’m so glad she stayed.
Her dam, June Bug, is the very first doeling ever born at Rafter O, and we’re incredibly proud of her. June Bug is a dream to milk with excellent Nubian breed character. She earned multiple top honors in the ring, including Best in Show, Best Udder in Show, and Grand Champion Senior Mini Nubian Doe at the Hill Country Mini Milkers Fall Frolic in Decatur, TX on November 3, 2018. She also claimed Best Udder in Show again at the Hill Country Mini Milkers Texas Two-Step on June 2, 2019.
Nessie’s sire, Tundra, is our outstanding buck from out West who brings a powerhouse pedigree full of champions and milk stars. With his excellent conformation and calm demeanor, he’s an essential part of our program. Tundra was awarded Reserve Grand Champion Mini Nubian Buckling in the Fall 2020 MDGA Virtual Show, holds his *B milk star, and also won Reserve Grand Champion Mini Nubian Senior Buck in both the Summer 2021 and Fall 2022 MDGA Virtual Shows.
With this kind of proven lineage behind her, Nessie combines the best of both parents, promising great things ahead both in the show ring and on the milk stand.
🏆 Show Highlights
- Fall 2024 – MDGA Virtual Show
- 🥇 Grand Champion Mini Nubian Junior Doe – Judge: Lavinia Allen
- 💬 “This was a very beautiful class of Junior Mini Nubian doelings. Entry D has the advantage in Body Capacity being deeper in the heart girth and barrel. She has good width throughout, especially in the chest floor, tighter toe set, strong rear leg angulation, smooth blending through her longer topline, and clear dairy wedges from the side and top.”
- May 2025 – North Texas Tango
- 🥈 Reserve Grand Champion Mini Nubian Senior Doe – Judge: Jake Bradford
- 🏆 Best Udder in Age Class
This win at the North Texas Tango is a reflection of Nessie’s balanced conformation, strong dairy character, and beautifully attached udder—all key traits that set her apart in the ring. Her performance was a proud moment for our herd, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for this promising doe as she continues to grow and compete.
🐞 Name Origin
“Water Bug” was the last of June Bug’s unforgettable quintuplets, and by the time she arrived, we were nearly out of clever “Bug” names to continue her dam’s theme. With a little inspiration from the pond, the name Water Bug seemed like a perfect fit—lighthearted, unique, and a playful continuation of June Bug’s legacy.
True water bugs are fascinating little insects that skim across the surface of ponds and streams, quick and nimble on their tiny legs. Much like them, our Nessie came into the world small but mighty, full of life and spirit from the very start—even if she needed a little extra help to get going.
As we got to know her, the name “Nessie” quickly stuck as a nickname, a fun nod to the legendary Loch Ness Monster. Just like the elusive creature of Scottish folklore, our Nessie captures the imagination with her gentle presence, graceful lines, and the bit of mystery that comes with watching her grow and transform. Together, “Water Bug” and “Nessie” tell a sweet story of both her beginnings and the promise she carries into the future.
